Segmedica and Research America Release White Paper on Mental Health

Newtown Square, PA, September 30, 2025 – Research America, Inc. and its behavioral science subsidiary Segmedica have released a new white paper, The Threat to Mental Health: A Complicated but Significant Concern. The report examines the growing mental health crisis in the United States, highlighting the impact of stigma, systemic barriers, and comorbid health conditions on individuals and communities.

Drawing on CDC data and consumer research, the paper shows how rates of depression and anxiety continue to rise across all age groups, with young adults and high school students particularly affected. Vulnerable populations including women, marginalized racial and ethnic groups, LGBTQ+ individuals, and rural residents face disproportionate challenges in accessing care.

Insights Through Behavioral Science

The white paper underscores that the mental health crisis cannot be addressed solely through traditional medical care. Stigma, language, and social perception remain powerful barriers to treatment. At the same time, comorbidities such as heart disease, chronic pain, and substance use disorders complicate both diagnosis and care. A psychographic and behavioral lens is essential to uncovering the deeper motivations, fears, and pressures that shape how people seek and experience mental health care.

Key Recommendations for Healthcare Leaders

  • Expand access to affordable, holistic, and integrated care that includes behavioral and physical health
  • Expand access to affordable, holistic, and integrated care that includes behavioral and physical health
  • Build empathetic, representative messaging that goes beyond surface level awareness campaigns
  • Support policies that protect access to employment, housing, education, and healthcare for those with mental health conditions
  • Create feedback loops with patients and providers that turn lived experience into actionable solutions

The report challenges healthcare stakeholders and policymakers to move beyond fragmented responses. An integrated approach that combines clinical care, public health initiatives, and policy reform is critical to building meaningful progress.
